At the interview, the man answered a question with "I don't know."
He was not turned down.
It counted in his favour.

Answer
The interviewer had asked a question with no good answer on purpose, to see whether he would bluff.
He said he did not know, and asked whether he could look it up and come back — which was exactly what they were hoping for.
